The Dream of the Cosmos: A Quest for the Soul

Author: Anne Baring

Illustrations: Robin Baring

The Dream of the Cosmos is the story of a multi-layered quest to understand the causes of human suffering and to reconnect with a deeper reality than the one we inhabit in this physical dimension of experience. It seeks to answer the questions: “Who are we?” and “Why are we here, on this planet?” It is offered to those who are looking for something beyond the superficial values of our culture, who may be disillusioned with religious and secular belief systems as currently presented and who question political values which are deeply mired in the pursuit of power. It is written with two voices: one the voice of a personal quest and the other which explores the historical and psychological causes that have brought into being our present view of reality.

“Redeem the time. Redeem the unread vision in the higher dream.” - T.S.Eliot

The need to heal the split between spirit and matter — the need for the return of the feminine — is one of the most important stories of our present time. As we wake up to our ecological crisis, we sense the imbalance that lies at the root of our culture, the result of our loss of contact with the sacredness of the earth that is the cornerstone of all indigenous cultures. But few have dared to penetrate to the very foundation of this cultural split and to see how it has evolved over the centuries, to comprehend the real depths of the imbalance that now threatens our whole planet. Anne Baring’s extraordinary personal journey has taken her to that deeper vision and understanding. Her book is a testimony to the Feminine; it is the story of what we have lost and what we need to regain.

Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, author of The Return of the Feminine and the World Soul

If you buy one book this year, let it be this one, an extraordinary comprehensive, exalted masterpiece by one of the planet's greatest visionaries of the Sacred Feminine. I have myself read it slowly twice and am starting again to savor it, paragraph by paragraph. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is an education in itself and will bring you joy and sober strong hope in the middle of all that we are now enduring.
Andrew Harvey, Author, Scholar and Mystic

I am deeply into reading one of the most important and evocative books I have ever read -The Dream of the Cosmos: A Quest for the Soul by Anne Baring. It is a work of genius and transformation.

It is a magnificent and huge book. I feel so nourished reading it – slowly – what an undertaking to gather and shape such a vast realm. I feel I have been waiting for that book through my life, following a thread that connected me to the earth, to my body, to the spirit world – the body and the natural world portals to the invisible world – and I have wept at the neglect and blinding of our body selves. You untangle the threads so finely. It strengthens me knowing more clearly the history of our separation from the natural world: the loneliness of modern man, of modern medicine. For me it has been such a joy when the body softens, awakens, breathes and discovers another immanent world that connects. THANK YOU for such a truly wonderful book.

Brilliant, profound and magisterial in its scope; she addresses the real cultural roots of our multifaceted crisis — spiritual, psychological, ecological, social, political and economic.

An amazing collection of wonderful and inspiring thoughts about the true deep meaning of our existence. A beautiful ride through the cosmos within and without.

Anne Baring calls for a fundamental transformation in the way human beings live on this Earth and with each other.

If you read only one book in the next decade, this encyclopaedic volume is the one you should read.

One of the best books on personal transformation that I have ever read. A powerful mix of profound scholarship and personal life story. The book is designed as a healing experience for self and society. A true gift to humanity!!

I finished reading The Dream of the Cosmos today. It has taken me several years as I found each page of your work to be deep and significant. You have written about what I have always known to be innately true yet had not found my own words for expression nor read anywhere else. It is a vast knowledge.

I felt that each time I picked up The Dream of the Cosmos, that what I was reading was resonating on another frequency with the events occurring in my own life and the world around me. The final two chapters are inspiring and relevant. I was moved to tears.

Thank you so much for your gift of The Dream of the Cosmos: it is one of the most significant books I have read and it will always have a special place in my life. I hope to move forward in this lifetime making a contribution to the beauty and love that is a part of this world and the dream of the cosmos. With warm regards and deep appreciation.

A brilliant work of complex subjects on meaning of Cosmos, a moving and wise book to turn to again and again. It will become a classic.

To delve into this magnificent book is to embark on a personal journey which can lead in many directions. There is so much between these pages in which Anne Baring displays an intellectual virtuosity which is as profound as it is sharp as a tack. Then author is a Jungian analyst, a religious scholar and historian; the book is her magnus opus and is a natural follow up to her scholarly work “Myth of the Goddess “(1991). The Jungian influence runs like a silk thread throughout the text leading to her passionate plea for the rebirth of the feminine archetype in the western world. Also of special note is her re-appraisal of the traditional doctrine of “original sin” which she demonstrates has spawned centuries of repression and a warped understanding of salvation, an aberration which still lurks in our unconscious. Tellingly we see her personal rationale for writing in a warm passage (p.523) where we glimpse that she has written the book out of love of life, humanity and love for the mystery of the Cosmos. The task has obviously taken her a step closer to answering the perennial question “Who am I” and in this process she will open the eyes of any enquiring reader and reroute us to a new, more authentic, way of living. In these pages the most complex of subjects are presented with the lightest of touches so that by the time the reader gets to the final page, you just say “WOW”. And then you will want to read the whole book over again.
